Welcome our new Labour Director: Neal Adolph

United Way British Columbia is pleased to announce that Neal Adolph has been appointed to the position of Director, Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Labour Participation Department.

An advocate for labour and community

Neal has a strong background in the labour movement and a master’s degree in history from Simon Fraser University, where his research explored how governments and activist organizations shape workplace culture during efforts to organize workers into a union. He is a long-time advocate for workers and an enthusiastic supporter of building stronger, more diverse, and more vibrant communities.

“Since joining our Labour Department in 2017, Neal has shown great leadership and a keen ability to engage our passionate labour supporters,” said Michael McKnight, President & CEO of the United Way British Columbia.

“United Way’s partnership with the Canadian labour movement is a key driver to our success in community,” says Neal. “I’m looking forward to building off of the work of my predecessors.”

“I will continue working closely with unions and their members, to help them better connect to their community in ways that allow them to build upon their passions and care for the people around them.”

Leading in new areas

Neal was instrumental in the success of Tampon Tuesday 2018, which garnered over 220,00 individual, donated hygiene products; over 7 times the amount raised in its inaugural year. The initiative has grown largely thanks to close partnerships and generous participation of local unions. Donations were distributed to local agencies and vulnerable members of our community in need of accessible hygiene products.

“This role helps the labour movement channel our collective energies towards common goals,” said Jeannie Kilby, President of CUPE 402, City of Surrey, and co-chair of the Labour Committee with the United Way of the Lower Mainland Board of Directors.

“We look forward to working with Neal to mobilize unions and labour members in United Way initiatives, helping build truly inclusive communities, where everyone belongs.”

Looking ahead

“United Way and the labour community share strong progressive values,” added George Davison, President of the Federation of Post Secondary Educators, and fellow Labour Committee co-chair.

“Neal is a great example of these values, and will no doubt model them in this role.”

Neal writes a card to a senior in his life at United Way Day 2018 with UW Labour Cabinet Member Bob Dhaliwal and Labour Committee co-chair Jeannie Kilby.

“I am excited to continue strengthening the partnership between United Way and the Canadian Labour Congress, and to ignite the desire in everyone to improve the communities we all call home,” says Neal.

We can’t wait to see his local love in action.

Congratulations Neal!
