For the second year in a row, a number of maritime employers and unions are banding together to raise money for United Way. Last year, Waterfront United raised $545,000 to help children, families and seniors in the Lower Mainland. From pancake breakfasts, to pizza lunches and human hamster races. more than 6,000 people are having fun, learning about their communities, and committing their gifts to United Way. The collective fundraising effort is halfway through its campaign. The BC Maritime Employers’ Association kicked off the annual campaign on October 23 by hosting a pancake breakfast for hundreds of International Longshore and Warehouse Union members at their dispatch hall. Port Metro Vancouver donated United Way screen time on their large digital display board at Canada Place – one of the most high-traffic and unique spots in Vancouver’s downtown core – and Neptune Terminals hung a huge 40 foot x 10 foot banner in support of United Way. “None of the terrific work United Way does in the community can happen without the support of donors,” said Waterfront United Chair Dave Richardson, President & CEO, Octaform Systems Inc. Waterfront United co-chair Walter Gerlach, Directing Business Representative IAMAW (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), Northwest District 250, adds, “We all play a role in improving the lives of those who are vulnerable in our communities. This collective effort underlines how through working together, we really can make the impossible possible.” Thanks to the support of initiatives like Waterfront United, United Way British Columbia will continue to support research, identify gaps, and invest in organizations to build stronger communities. We use our collective strength to multiply our impact, maximize our donor’s dollars, and mobilize and advocate for change.
