It’s Pride Week in Vancouver. The 36th annual Pride Parade takes place Sunday, August 3, starting at noon at Robson and Thurlow Streets in Vancouver and is expected to attract a crowd of 650,000 people. The Parade is put on by The Vancouver PRIDE Society, a non-profit organization that brings together members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Two-Sprited and Queer (LGBTTQ) community, their friends, allies and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the community. Studies have shown a correlation between bullying and sexual orientation and that LGBTQ students are more likely to experience bullying and harassment. This connection has been a frequent theme in videos submitted by students to United Way as part of the Care to Change competition. United Way helps school-age kids become happy, healthy and strong so that they can reach their full potential. By investing in after-school problems, for example, we provide safe places where children feel they belong, find great role models, and grow their confidence. When we help one another, the possibilities for the future are endless.
