Thanks to the support of donors across the Lower Mainland, United Way is able to focus on helping children ages 0-6 have a better start in life. United Way British Columbia together with Success By 6 – a unique partnership of United Ways, Credit Unions of BC, the BC Government (MCFD) and Aboriginal and community leaders – is helping kids get a good start in life in communities across B.C. Like in Tipella located in the Lower Lakes region south of Pemberton, B.C. Your support means this First Nations community just celebrated the opening of their new early childhood centre. What this early childhood centre means is that children won’t have to drive for hours back and forth along a rough logging road to get to school in this remote community. The childhood centre will also act as a community centre with drop-in programs and a community kitchen for families and community to access year round. This is particularly important during the summer months, when children need extra support to maintain their learning when they are out of school. Families are returning home to reclaim their heritage and embrace the future. “Progressiveness. That’s the word I’m looking for. If we can do it – a small little village – others can do this,” says Xa’xtsa – Douglas First Nation Councillor Oliver Peters. Learn more about how you are helping children be all they can be.
