United Way’s Public Policy Institute will take the stage in Seattle as part of the Imagine, Independent Sector National Conference, Nov.16-18. PPI faculty Mike Harcourt will present broad lessons learned from his experience in public office that relate to non-profit advocacy. He will also talk about why he felt it was important to help non-profits engage in public policy by serving as the lead faculty of UWBC’s Public Policy Institute. UWBC staffer Yves Trudel will provide program details, such as participant recruitment, curriculum development, and outcomes to supplement Mike’s presentation. Just under 100 non-profit leaders from across the province have graduated from the PPI with freshly honed presentation skills and armed with a better understanding the public policy process so that they are more able to influence change. Melanie Angus, one of the 2014 PPI graduates, focussed her work on “Bridging the Gaps in Mental Health Service Delivery for the Hazeltons.” “PPI helped me broaden my vision, allowed me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people and helped me broadcast our project in succinct and direct ways that helped others understand our cause in a matter of minutes,” said Melanie. Enrollment in the PPI is open to organizations involved in social or health related services from all regions of the province. The next session starting in January is full.
