United Way welcomes the world to Vancouver

Michael McKnight, President and CEO of United Way British Columbia, welcomed nearly 1,200 delegates to United Way’s annual Community Leadership Conference with a Host City Reception at the Vancouver Aquarium presented by United Steelworkers. Steve Hunt, Director, District 3, United Steelworkers said in a statement, “As a global union striving for social justice, we understand the value and need of such an exchange of ideas and initiatives.” Steve Hunt currently serves as a Board Member on the Board of Directors of United Way British Columbia and is a former Chair of the Board. Deloitte joined the United Steelworkers in sponsoring the Host City Welcome Reception as the Social Innovation sponsor. The Coast Salish Eagle Song Dancers offered a traditional welcome for the guests. “This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our region and our culture to United Way delegates from around the world,” says Michael McKnight. “We also welcome the chance to share strategies and stories of community impact with others and to learn how each United Way works to make our world a better place through local work in their own communities.” United Way Worldwide’s annual Community Leaders Conference runs from May 9-12 and is the first ever held outside the United States. The Conference is United Way Worldwide’s premier leadership event and brings together corporate, government and nonprofit sector leaders with United Way community leaders from Mumbai to Memphis and everywhere in between. Conference attendees share opportunities and promising practices that inspire and move United Way’s work forward.
