For more than 30 years, United Way and Labour have worked together to improve lives and strengthen communities. Behind the achievements of this partnership are people who dedicate their lives and careers to advocating for social change. Three outstanding individuals, who have done just that, were recognized yesterday at the 21st Annual Labour Appreciation Night. The event was hosted by United Way British Columbia, the Vancouver and District Labour Council, and the New Westminster and District Labour Council. Pacific Blue Cross, B.C.’s only unionized benefits provider with employees represented by CUPE Local 1816, presented the event. The 2014 Community Service Awards were given to: •    The Vancouver and District Labour Council Syd Thompson Community Service Award: Ingrid Kolsteren. A passionate labour movement supporter, Ms. Kolsteren has dedicated herself to collective action, social justice and representing the voice of women and workers. She is currently a volunteer board member and Vancouver and District Labour Council committee liaison with Women Transforming Cities, where she advocates to make Vancouver work better for women. •    The New Westminster and District Labour Council’s Labour Community Service Award: Carol Riviere. Ms. Riviere is an active volunteer who believes in promoting social, economic and environmental justice. She was a founding member of the Public Interest Research Group of BC, volunteer with the West Coast Environmental Law Association and board member and treasurer for the SFU Childcare Society. •    United Way British Columbia’s Joe Morris Labour Community Service Award: Gwenne Farrell. A long-time union activist, Ms. Farrell is vice-president of COPE Local 378 where she is passionate about advocating for the health and safety of union workers. Currently, Ms. Farrell sits on United Way British Columbia’s Board of Directors, and served four years as co-chair of the Campaign Labour Committee. Congratulations to all!
