Sheila Ross, a long-time community supporter has been recognized with the 2017 Joseph and Rosalie Segal United Way Community Vision Award. She received the tribute Tuesday night surrounded by family and friends at United Way British Columbia’s annual recognition event for major gift donors, the Pathfinders Dinner.
The Community Vision Award recognizes individuals or families who have shown outstanding commitment to the betterment of the community through their leadership and support of United Way.
Sheila, along with her husband, Bob, who is deceased, have been loyal supporters of United Way since 1991. Sheila’s father was F.R. Graham, an important financier and industrialist in pre- and post-war BC, and owner of Union Steamships. Graham was one of 10 “founding fathers” of the Vancouver Foundation, Canada’s largest community foundation.
Sheila gives to United Way because of how the organization does its work: applying in-depth research and strategic thinking to identify and address emerging needs in the community. Her particular areas of interest include helping single (immigrant) mothers and children in need, particularly those that age out of foster care.
She was and still has a keen interest in sports including sailing, equestrian and golf.
“Sheila and her family’s generosity to United Way has been exemplary,” said Michael McKnight, President & CEO, United Way British Columbia. “Her commitment to our community is an example for all and why she has been chosen as this year’s Joseph and Rosalie United Way Community Vision Award recipient.”
