Congratulations to Joe and Rosalie Segal and family! The prominent philanthropists have been recognized with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individuals’ extraordinary contribution and dedication to the fundraising profession. They were also lauded with The Giving Heart award in the category of Outstanding Philanthropist to an Organization Raising over $15 million.
The Giving Hearts Award program was created to acknowledge the true expression of philanthropy. This award recognizes and celebrates the volunteers, leaders, fundraisers, philanthropists, and youth that make a difference to non-profit organizations like United Way British Columbia.
The Segals have given generously to causes ranging from the Variety Club and B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation to Simon Fraser University. In 2010, they donated $12-million to help construct the Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre on the site of Vancouver General Hospital.
The Segals have also been long-time and generous supporters of United Way British Columbia. For more than 30 years, they have been tireless advocates on United Way’s behalf to other key leaders in the community.
“The Segals have been inspirational leaders in our community. Their generosity has changed countless lives through their support of United Way,” said Michael McKnight, President & CEO, United Way British Columbia. “These Giving Hearts awards are a perfect way to acknowledge these community heroes.”
Joe Segal is well-known in Vancouver business circles for his self-made success. He founded the Fields department store chain that segued into his family’s holding company, Kingswood Capital.
The Segals were instrumental in partnering with United Way to launch several major giving initiatives with United Way including: United Way’s Real Estate Initiative; United Way British Columbia’s Philanthropists’ Circle; and United Way’s Pathfinders Dinner, an event that recognizes United Way donors who contribute over $10,000.
Pathfinders started in 1987 at the Segal’s home and then moved to the Four Seasons Hotel in 1993 where it still takes place today. In 2011, United Way worked with the Segals to create the Joe and Rosalie Segal Community Vision Award. The award recognizes outstanding philanthropic support by an individual or family to United Way. This year’s winner was philanthropist Sheila Ross. Past recipients are Debra Hewson, Rudy Keerklaan, Yuri Fulmer, Mary C. Jordan and Emily Griffiths.
