Peers build piers for kids

BCRTC and Thales Canada employees work together at The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring
BC Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) and Thales Canada employees sweated together on a hot afternoon in June for a good cause: building docks at the Sasamat Outdoor Centre. The employees volunteered their time through a The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring. Sasamat Outdoor Centre, funded by United Way, inspires personal growth and leadership through learning and playing in the outdoors. The centre makes sure that all kids get a chance to attend summer camps no matter what their financial circumstance. This is BCRTC’s 14th year participating in a Day of Caring at Sasamat Outdoor Centre; their first project in 1998 was to build the docks that they rebuilt last week. To acknowledge their annual contribution, the campgrounds bear the name of their many Day of Caring projects ranging from pathways to the archery range. The BCRTC team has a lot to be proud of with their annual volunteer effort. Not only do they lend a hand to Sasamat Outdoor Centre each year, they help other agencies with projects like painting and building every fall. Thales Canada and BCTRC work closely together, so volunteering for The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring was a natural fit. New relationships and a sense of accomplishment emerged when the new docks finally made their way into the lake! Sasamat Outdoor Centre is a member of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia, a community partner of the United Way British Columbia.
