Congratulations to the class of 2016! Twenty-four community leaders have all graduated from United Way’s innovative professional development program, the Public Policy Institute (PPI). Graduates walk away with new knowledge, skills and tools so that they are better able to understand and influence the public policy process. Leaders from a variety of organizations including from BC Poverty Reduction Coalition to the First Nations Education Steering Committee participated this year. Projects ranged from advocating for robust publicly-funded education in BC to helping former youth in care find a way home to ensuring there are choices for seniors aging in place with dignity. PPI brings together not-for-profit leaders from across the province with experts in the field for monthly two-day training sessions from January to June each year. Returning for the sixth year, lead faculty was former Premier of BC, Mike Harcourt. The high caliber faculty included former MLA Elizabeth Cull; Brenda Eaton, Board Director, Translink; Dr. Liz Whynot, Board Member, First Nation Health Authority and Ida Goudreau, Adjunct Professor, Sauder School of Business. “I’m always amazed at the tremendous passion of these professionals,” said Michael McKnight, President & CEO, United Way British Columbia. “Their energy and ideas really propel public policy to be responsive to emerging needs in the community.
