McMillan: Leveling the playing field for local youth

When it comes to a strong commitment to its community, McMillan is pitch perfect.

The international business law firm based in downtown Vancouver is a long-time champion of the United Way, and since 2015 has supported local youth through its Corners for Kids program with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Tom Theodorakis (L), Office Management Partner, and McMillan staff support local kids.

“For every ‘Caps corner kick at home, we donate $100 to United Way,” says Tom Theodorakis, Office Management Partner. “An additional $500 is donated for every goal scored off a corner kick.”
Talk about a winning bonus.

“It’s such an exciting fundraising outlet for United Way. We always hope for corner kicks because we know it means more money will go towards helping local kids. I always enjoy hearing the total raised after each game.”

Giving back to the community is important to Tom and the McMillan team. The firm is involved in various charitable initiatives, including the Vancouver Sun Run and the Big Bike Challenge for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Every year it runs a week-long United Way campaign, which includes multiple activities and high-energy events.

“Last year we raised close to $20,000 in support of local programs, many of which provide safe, supportive spaces for youth,” says Tom.

These include initiatives like United Way’s Schools Out programming, which provide healthy, safe, educational activities so that vulnerable elementary students can make constructive use of their time outside of school.

“Kids are the backbone of strong, healthy and caring communities,” says Tom. “We know how lucky we and our families are. It’s so important that we support programs that champion local kids and youth. These opportunities should be available to everyone and every child should be able to achieve their dreams.”

The firm’s commitment to positive social change also makes for great teambuilding.

“The McMillan community is filled with some of the most caring and thoughtful individuals I know,” concludes Tom. “Knowing that giving back is helping foster opportunities for those who might not otherwise get the chance is the greatest feeling there is.”

McMillan’s Corners for Kids kicks off again this Sunday, March 4th when the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Montreal Impact.
