For more than 30 years, United Way and Labour have worked together to improve lives and strengthen communities. Behind the achievements of this partnership are people who dedicate their lives and careers to advocating for social change.Three outstanding individuals, who have done just that, were recognized at the 23rd Annual Labour Appreciation Night held last night. The event was hosted by United Way British Columbia, the Vancouver District and Labour Council and the New Westminster District Labour Council. Pacific Blue Cross, B.C.’s only unionized benefits provider, presented the event. The 2016 Community Service Award winners are:

Irene Lanzinger, President, BC Federation of Labour, and George Davison

United Way British Columbia Joe Morris Labour Community Service Award – George Davison Helping others through education and community activism is George Davison’s passion. He has been a leading Labour volunteer at United Way British Columbia since 2009 having served as a member and co-chair of the Campaign Labour Committee, on the Campaign Cabinet, as a Board member and Chair of the Board Labour Committee. He has been active for 25 years in the post-secondary system having served as President of the Faculty Association of the College of New Caledonia, President of the National Union of the Canadian Association of University Teachers and as President, Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC.

Vancouver and District Labour Council Syd Thompson Community Service Award – Ellen Woodsworth Ellen Woodsworth believes in social justice, economic equality and environmental sustainability. The former Vancouver COPE City Councillor and Chairperson of the Women Transforming Cities International Society is most passionate about affordable housing, a living wage for all and advancing equity and inclusion in municipalities around the world. Ellen has served as the Chairperson of Bridge Housing Society and the DTES Women Centre. In addition, she has championed women, queer, multicultural and seniors’ rights both as an activist and a volunteer.

Chuck Puchmayr and Carolyn Rice, Secretary-Treasurer, New Westminster & District Labour Council

New Westminster and District Labour Council Labour Community Service Award – Chuck Puchmayr As a young worker, Chuck Puchmayr saw the Labour movement as way to fulfill his dreams of helping others in need, particularly those who didn’t have a voice. Worker safety and good labour practices in the forestry industry motivated much of Chuck’s advocacy. As the Opposition Labour Critic in Victoria, Chuck advocated for working families on a host of issues from 2005 to 2009. Today, he is the Chairperson of the Lookout Foundation, A Beef with Hunger Society, is a member of the New Westminster Council and current Executive Past President of the Lower Mainland Local Government Association.
