Nine things to do this Labour Day weekend!

It’s the last long weekend of summer. It’s also Canada’s 144th Labour Day. Labour Day celebrates workers achievements and has its roots in an 1872 printer’s strike in Toronto where workers fought for a nine-hour workday. Here are some ideas on what to do this weekend.

  1. Have a picnic with your neighbours! This Friday, from 11 am to 2 pm at Holly Park in Surrey’s Guildford community, there will be a neighbourhood picnic. It’s a potluck and people are asked to bring your favorite cultural dish. Look for the group of happy people near the swimming pool. This is part of United Way Avenues of Change early childhood initiative in Surrey.
  2. The Richmond World Festival is happening on Saturday, September 3, 11 am to 10 pm at Minoru Park. This is Richmond’s newest signature event and its first major multicultural festival.
  3. In North Vancouver, enjoy the free Shipyards Night Market. It’s a farmers market featuring local artisans, bakers and farmers with live entertainment and a beer garden.
  4. Get a taste of Taiwan at the free Vancouver TaiwanFest, September 3-5, 2016. Featuring food, concerts, visual art and family activities in several locations downtown including Granville Street and the Queen Elizabeth plaza.
  5. Listen to live music for free at the Victory Square Block Party on Sunday, September 4. This all-ages music festival takes place from 2 to 9 with an eclectic mix of musical styles.
  6. Say goodbye to summer at the Fair at the PNE. The annual fair is a combinaton of Playland, fair food, agricultural exhibits and shows.
  7. Celebrate Labour Day at a Labour Day picnic. Enjoy BC Federation of Labour’s Labour Day picnic at Swanguard Stadium Sunday, September 5 from 11 am to 3 pm. The event is free and features a performance by 54-40.
  8. Get a new perspective: see the Picasso: The Artist and His Muses exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Their Sunday Family Program is free for Children 12 & under. Then stick around in the evening for Facade Festival 2016 featuring art projections on the outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery building evenings from 8 pm to 12 am from August 30 until the grande finale on September 5.
  9. Metro Vancouver is one of the best places for outdoor adventure. Grab a picnic and take a hike to one of the many scenic spots across the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky region. Many are accessible by public transit and vary in difficulty from a walk in the park to serious adventure!
