Sixteen Labour activists learned firsthand that support from unions and donors helps Burnaby Meals on Wheels serve over 135 clients more than 9,000 meals annually thanks to United Way funding. “The United Way Labour Partnership Agency Tour is a fantastic opportunity to see your donation dollars in use. It was really cool being able to tour the facilities that the United Way supports and speak with the people benefiting from them,” says Cara Kerins, Secretary Treasurer, ILWU 502 and first-time tour attendee. This information was shared as part of the 13th Annual United Way Labour Partnership Agency Tour held in June. Labour activists attending tours gain important knowledge about available community resources, which they share with the fellow union members. They were also introduced to the Food in Burnaby map which provides locations for various markets and grocery stores, community food and meal programs as well as community gardens and farmers markets to help those in need access nutritious food. The food map was developed with United Way funding. The tour participants also visited two other United Way-funded agencies – the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) which provides innovative services for children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities and their families in Metro Vancouver and New Westminster’s Cameray Child and Family Services which specializes in counselling programs for children, youth and families who are victims of trauma and sexual abuse and as well as high risk youth. “I would definitely recommend the Agency Tour to anyone looking for volunteer opportunities or just to see where your hard earned dollars get spent,” said Cara Kerins.
