Labour Day of Caring: They came, they saw, they cleaned!
Labour volunteers spent Labour Day of Caring helping out at YWCA Como Lake Gardens in Coquitlamed Way and give the gift that gives back!
When there’s work to be done, you can count on Labour volunteers to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand…or 24. On September 19, a dozen volunteers, including members from United Way British Columbia’s Campaign Cabinet Labour Committee and the Labour Participation Department, as well as several Labour Campaign Associates, spent the day painting, gardening and cleaning at YWCA Como Lake Gardens in Coquitlam. “Despite the downpour of rain that day, no one’s spirit could be dampened,” said Mervyn Van Steinburg, Director, CLC Labour Department at United Way British Columbia. “The Labour Day of Caring gives us the chance to connect with the agencies that Labour and United Way support. We can see first-hand what agencies are doing to help the community and give them a lending hand at the same time. It’s a win-win for everyone!” Under the direction of Darcie Gabruck, YWCA’s Community Development Coordinator, volunteers worked hard to spruce up the housing community. Unions that were represented included CUPE, FPSE, IBEW and Unifor.
