It’s Neighbourhood House week in B.C. This year, United Way British Columbia is proud to be the title sponsor of the Association of Neighbourhood House of BC’s Good Neighbour Awards (ANHBC) 2017 taking place May 11. The Good Neighbour Awards recognize local heroes who make neighbourhoods better places to live. Awards include Youth Awards, Neighbourhood House Awards and Corporate Awards. One outstanding British Columbian who personifies ANHBC’s sense of community is also recognized. This year’s winner is Sean R. Lauer. Lauer is an academic, a community volunteer and an outstanding champion for neighbourhood houses. United Way and the ANHBC both share the common vision of building strong, healthy communities. Both organizations share a long history having grown up together over the decades. United Way’s influence in Neighbourhood Houses tracks back to 1932 when United Way (then known as the Vancouver Welfare Federation) invested $7,052.67 into the Alexandra Fresh Air Camp located in White Rock. In 1938, we invested $7,300 in the West End Community Centre, the precursor to Gordon Neighbourhood House. Fast forward to today. In 2016 alone, United Way invested more than $1.3 million into Neighbourhood Houses.
