Last July, the Canadian Medical Association published a report Healthcare in Canada: What Makes Us Sick? Poverty was found to be the most significant determinant of illness. Other significant determinants include access to affordable and safe housing, early childhood development and education as reported in The Vancouver Courier. By understanding the social determinants of health, government, community and agencies can work together to improve the overall health of the population. In the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health authorities are conducting a public survey to assess population health and determine health supports needed in your local community. Take the survey! United Way British Columbia works to prevent childhood poverty so that children can get the best possible start in life. Too many families struggle to meet basic needs like food, shelter, transportation and clothing.
