A little help from some friends

Glenda and Nicole at Camp Sasamat

Glenda Sherlock and her daughter Nicole have been volunteering at The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring for 15 years!

There are only a few people that can say they’ve attended the same summer camp for 15 years.  Glenda Sherlock is one of them.  This year marks Glenda’s 15th year participating as a volunteer in The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring at Sasamat Outdoor Centre. Glenda volunteers her time with a group of dedicated BC Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) and Thales Canada employees that are happy to come back to camp each year. Their first project in 1998 was to build the docks that are being replaced this year. This is work that needs to get done before more than 2,000 campers descend on Camp Sasamat to participate in their Summer Camp Program. “Many in our group started 15 or more years ago, and it’s like camp for us, because we get to come back and connect each year,” says Glenda, whose daughter Nicole is a former camper who now volunteers. Cam Irvine is another volunteer who comes back year after year with his father Gerry. “Getting people out [to volunteer] is the hardest part, but once we show them what we need to do, they realize what a special place it is.” Bronco Cathcart, the Executive Director of the camp that is funded in part by United Way appreciates the help. “It’s great having people come back year after year. They’re like old friends”. Sasamat Outdoor Centre, funded in part by United Way British Columbia, inspires personal growth and leadership in kids through learning and playing in the outdoors. The centre makes sure that all kids get a chance to attend summer camps no matter what their financial circumstance. United Way British Columbia would like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of these special volunteers who have come back year after year and thank them for helping kids be all they can be! Volunteers: Glenda Sherlock, Nicole Sherlock, Cameron Irvine, Gerry Irvine, Tristan Laderout, Valder Belgrave, Bill Knight, Sandy Powis, Ed Lawrence, Lee-ann Douglas, Rob Harvy, Richard Straw, Lina Marshall, Kevin Wadden, Kim Wager, Andrew Jones, Emil Vlad and Ramin Sandpour.
