Let’s have a (block) party!
Friends, food and fun! Block parties are a great way to get together with your neighbours.

The more, the merrier
Make new friends and reconnect with old ones. Involve your neighbours in planning and hosting the event. Have people organize food, plan games, drop off invitations and make name tags. They can also help with setting up and cleaning up once the party’s over.

A gathering place
Big or small, there are many options to host your gathering:

  • on private property like your backyard or driveway
  • on a street, local roads or cul de sacs (not busy roads)
  • in a park

Permits and insurance (not as fun, but quick and easy to apply for!)

  • If your party is on private property, permits are generally not needed.
  • You will need permission to close your street.
  • You will need liability insurance if your party is on the street or in a park.
  • Make sure you have all necessary confirmations and permits. Many cities and municipalities have all the information and ideas you need to host your party. Click the link below for specific guidelines, free permit applications and insurance details for hosting in parks and on streets.

A date and time

  • Pick a time and date when the most people can come to your party.
  • Give yourself enough time to organize and advertise your event.

Things to do
The big idea behind block parties is to help people get to know each other and have fun together. Here are a few ways to do that.

  • A BBQ
  • Backyard bowling
  • Sidewalk art projects such as chalk art
  • Street hockey competition
  • Treasure hunt
  • Potluck food
  • Music
  • “Get to know you” games

Send out the invites!
Make a flyer or invitation to send around to your neighbours. Don’t forget to send out reminders closer to the party.
