Vancouver is known around the world for our picturesque waterfront. The Gateway to our community and the largest in Canada, Vancouver’s port has significant employment and economic impacts to communities provincially and nationwide. And helping the community is top of mind for the maritime industry. At United Way, solving problems in our community means more than just giving immediate help. It’s about bringing the right people together to look at why there is need and to create long-term solutions. The Waterfront United initiative partners seven unions and 11 companies with United Way as part of an effort to multiple the impacts the maritime industry and employees has on children, families and seniors in our community. In 2013, the partnership raised $600,000 for United Way British Columbia, bringing together more than 6,000 people for the greater good to move children from poverty to possibility, help kids be all they can be, and build stronger communities for seniors. 2014 marked the second year of the initiative and the partners came back together again in October, successfully raising over $650,000 and setting a new record. Goals were broken by Waterfront employees stepping forward and pledging to support their community through generous donations to United Way British Columbia.  The partner unions and companies also participated in engaging events ranging from Halloween themed barbeques to impromptu pitch and putt competitions, proving that helping the community can also be fun. The 3rd year of the Waterfront United campaign will kick off in fall 2015 with a goal of continuing to surpass fundraising targets by bringing together the waterfront to help children, families and seniors across the Lower Mainland.
