Healthy Aging by United Way – Keeping seniors active, engaged and connected in 2019/20

Making the lives of older British Columbians better strengthens the social fabric that creates healthy, caring, and inclusive communities for all ages. At no time has this been clearer than in the face of the devastating COVID-19 global pandemic. When the crisis hit, British Columbians readily stepped up to support seniors. From volunteers to community organizations and non-profits and governments at all levels, it was an example of local love in action.

Preparedness built by strong connections

That preparedness is thanks in part to Healthy Aging by United Way’s leading-edge model of engagement and collaboration with seniors, caregivers, and volunteers, along with partners from all levels of government, researchers, and community-based seniors’ service sector.

“The relationships and networks we’ve built mean our communities are able to support vulnerable and isolated older adults in a responsive manner during normal times and during this crisis,” says Kahir Lalji, Provincial Director, Population Health at United Way of the Lower Mainland. “Everything we do at Healthy Aging by United Way is geared toward ensuring seniors are safe, active, engaged and connected at home and in community.
